The following is being distributed at the request of the Human Rights Commission:

The Human Rights Commission releases the decision of chief adjudicator, Mary OBrien, awarding Jeannine Winter of Wabush $10,500 in damages as a result of a human rights complaint filed in February 1999. Jeannine Winter filed a complaint against her former employer Networth Management Inc. and Robert Patten of Labrador City alleging discrimination in employment on the basis of sex.

Ms. Winter commenced employment as administrative bookkeeper with Networth Management Inc. in July 1997. She commenced maternity leave in July 1998 and was planning to return to work on January 18, 1999. When Ms. Winter notified Mr. Patten she was ready to return to work, he informed her that there was no job for her as he would not lay-off her maternity replacement. The award outlined in the board of inquiry decision represents loss wages and compensation for mental anguish associated with Ms. Winters termination of employment.
