The following is being distributed at the request of the Human Rights Commission:

The Human Rights Commission reports that a Board of Inquiry will commence on Tuesday, February 1 into a complaint filed with the Commission against Memorial University of Newfoundland.

A complaint was filed with the Commission by Ayesha Fiech of St. John�s in December 1997 alleging discrimination in employment on the basis of sex. Ms. Fiech, in her complaint to the Human Rights Commission, stated that she had applied for the position of Internship Co-ordinator at the Department of Computer Science. Ms. Fiech who was pregnant at the time of the interview stated that she was questioned about her pregnancy during the interview. In her complaint, Ms. Fiech also states that her husband was told she did not get the position because of her pregnancy. The matter could not be resolved during the investigation and the Human Rights Commission ordered the appointment of a Board of Inquiry in July 1998.

The Adjudicator for the complaint is Chief Adjudicator, Mary O�Brien, of St. John�s. Barry Fleming will present the complaint on behalf of the Human Rights Commission. The hearing which is open to the public is scheduled to commence at 10.00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1 in the Beothuck Building, 20 Crosbie Place.
