Province to participate in international petroleum events in Calgary

Next week, Newfoundland and Labrador will be represented at two prominent international petroleum events taking place in Calgary. Premier Brian Tobin, along with Industry, Trade and Technology Minister, Sandra C. Kelly, and Mines and Energy Minister, Paul Dicks, will be attending the 16th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) from June 11-15. The Department of Industry, Trade and Technology is also leading a delegation of 22 local companies and organizations to the 17th National Petroleum Show (NPS), which runs concurrently with WPC this year.

For the first time in its 67-year history, the World Petroleum Congress, which is held every three years, will take place in Canada. WPC was founded in London in 1933 to provide a forum for discussing the issues facing the petroleum industry on a worldwide basis. An estimated 4000 delegates from more than 80 countries are expected to attend this years conference. Newfoundland and Labrador will have a booth at the event and will also be participating in Canada Night, an evening mosaic of cultural performers, artisans, and culinary delights. The province will have an 1800 square foot pavilion where traditional Newfoundland and Labrador food will be served and entertainment will be provided by The Fables.

"The worlds major oil and gas players, including representatives from the OPEC countries and international corporations, will all be attending the World Petroleum Congress. It provides an excellent opportunity to network with key members of the international petroleum sector and tell the rest of world about the exciting developments taking place in Newfoundland and Labradors rapidly growing oil and gas industry," said Premier Tobin.

The National Petroleum Show is held every two years in Calgary, and is one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in the world. Over 1500 exhibitors from more than 75 nations will showcase products and leading-edge technology at the exhibition.

The Department of Industry, Trade and Technology, together with local businesses, has participated in this important industry event for more than 20 years. With over 50,000 petroleum professionals from more than 10,000 companies expected to attend NPS this year, it will provide an opportunity for local businesses to make new contacts in the international petroleum sector, and to learn about new industry developments.

"Our province is steadfastly developing a strong reputation as one of Canadas leading oil producing provinces. The National Petroleum Show gives our local businesses and organizations a great opportunity to exhibit their products and services to an international audience," said Minister Kelly.

"We see this as a tremendous opportunity to showcase the investment potential of our province's petroleum industry, which is poised for years of expansion," added Minister Dicks.
