Newfoundland and Labrador Export Award recipients announced

During a reception for the 16th Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards yesterday, four companies were presented with awards: Grand Atlantic Seafoods Inc. of St. Johns, C & W Industrial Fabrication and Marine Equipment Ltd. of Bay Bulls, SEA Systems Ltd. of St. Johns, and FUTUREWORKS Inc. of Torbay.

Industry, Trade and Technology Minister Sandra C. Kelly, in conjunction with Lorne Janes, chairman of the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters Newfoundland and Labrador, and special guest, International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew, presented the awards, which recognize top exporters in the province. The event was one of the highlights of Newfoundland and Labrador Export Week, which also included a workshop and luncheon with Minister Pettigrew yesterday on Exporting to the United States.

"Exporting is a fundamental way to increase business growth, and build a stronger economy," Minister Kelly commented during the Export Awards. "Newfoundland and Labrador has quality products and services and we can compete on an international scale; this is certainly evident in the high caliber of award winners this year."

Grand Atlantic Seafoods Inc. of St. Johns harvests and processes seafood products from locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and exports to places such as the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and Europe; C & W Industrial Fabrication and Marine Equipment Ltd. of Bay Bulls, which specializes in the production of seafood harvesting equipment, unloading and processing equipment and aluminum work and pleasure boats, exports to various markets, such as the United States, Venezuela and Japan; SEA Systems Ltd. of St. Johns is an instrumentation, control and electrical systems integrator and supplier that exports to the United States, Europe and the Far East; and FUTUREWORKS Inc. of Torbay, which develops solutions to help organizations and communities operate in the information economy, has worked in over 22 countries around the world including the Caribbean and Africa.

"I would like to congratulate all of this years Newfoundland and Labrador Export Award recipients," said Lorne Janes. "These four companies are excellent examples of the business growth that can be achieved through exporting, and I encourage all Newfoundland and Labrador companies to consider exporting as a means of enhancing their existing businesses."

The criteria for the Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards is consistent with that of the Canadian Export Awards. Nominees must have been exporting for at least three years and have sales in markets outside of Canada.
