Minister congratulates magazines Top 50 CEOs

Atlantic Business Magazine today released its second annual list of Top 50 CEOs, which highlights outstanding business achievers in Atlantic Canada, based on nominations received from the magazines readers.

"I would like to offer my congratulations to the exceptional CEOs in the Atlantic region that made the Top 50 list this year. These are all leaders in our economy, and it is inspiring to see their commitment to improving opportunities, not just through their professional activities, but also through their support of social development," said Sandra Kelly, Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology. "I am especially proud that there are such a large number of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians on the list, with a total of 18 out of the 50 Top CEOs."

In selecting the final 50 CEOs, Atlantic Business Magazine considered financial information and company size, in addition to industry and community involvement and personal philosophy.

"Its all about people," said publisher Hubert Hutton in describing the reason for compiling the list. "A companys bottom line is often used to measure corporate excellence, but we

feel that every organization owes its success to the person in charge. Financial health is a result of good management. Our list of Atlantic Canadas Top 50 CEOs profiles the type of people who make things happen and the way they achieve results."

A total of nine women and 41 men are on this years list. They were chosen because of characteristics such as motivation, team building, innovation and enthusiasm, as well as their ability to be forward-thinking. Collectively, they demonstrate an increasing trend toward executive voluntarism.

The Top 50 CEOs are all involved in community causes, and they encourage their employees to do the same. They also give support at the organizational level through cash and in-kind donations. As a group, Atlantic Canadas Top 50 CEOs of 2000 generate approximately $4.25 billion in annual revenue and employ close to 20,000 people.
