Employment stable for September

Employment numbers for Newfoundland and Labrador last month were down marginally as compared to last year according to the latest Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada.

For September 2000 employment in the province declined by 0.4 per cent, or 800 jobs, as compared to September 1999, indicating little change from last year. The unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points from last year due to a smaller overall labour force. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate increased 0.6 percentage points from last month.

"While these latest numbers show job losses in industries such as fish processing and construction, we have had strong growth in the services sector," said Julie Bettney, Minister of Human Resources and Employment.

Growing service sector industries include, retail trade, accommodations and food services, information, culture and recreation and transportation and warehousing.
