The following news release was issued by the Seniors Resource Centre on October 11:

Caregivers, "Out of Isolation"

On Wednesday, October 11, 2000 the Seniors Resource Centre launched the new Informal Caregiver Project: Caregivers, "Out of Isolation" at a press conference held at Confederation Building.

Caregivers "Out of Isolation" is a three-year initiative intended to identify the needs of informal (unpaid) caregivers in Newfoundland and Labrador. The project will connect them to information and resources such as the toll-free caregiver information line (1-888-571-CARE) and a quarterly newsletter. It is expected to stimulate support through community volunteer groups and formal caregiver systems.

Roger Grimes, Minister of Health and Community Services said, "Between 75 and 80 per cent of all personal care in Canada is performed by informal caregivers who are often family members, friends and neighbours. Informal caregivers provide an invaluable role in supporting families and communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

The health care system has always depended on informal caregivers to provide a certain amount of care. With limited resources and more emphasis being placed on care within the community a greater burden has also been placed on informal caregivers. As a result of their responsibilities, caregivers often experience: exhaustion, stress, illness, guilt and social isolation.

"For years caregivers have been struggling to cope with the additional physical, emotional and financial stresses related to providing care," said Flo Paul, an informal caregiver and a member of the project advisory committee. "While some caregivers receive the support and understanding of family, friends and community, many others become fatigued with the day to day responsibilities and isolation. This project provides an excellent format for caregivers to connect with others, relieve stress, and create a greater awareness and understanding of the issues associated with caregiving."

The project is provided by the Seniors Resource Centre with the partnership and support of the Department of Health and Community Services, the four Regional Health and Community Service Boards, the two Integrated Health Boards, the Alzheimer Society, Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Mental Health Association, Newfoundland and Labrador Association for Community Living, Victorian Order of Nurses and the Newfoundland and Labrador Womens Institutes.

Funding for this project is made possible through the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation. It is one of eight national projects chosen to be funded.
