Addictions Awareness Week

The Department of Health and Community Services today acknowledged November 12-18 as Addictions Awareness Week (AAW).

Newfoundland and Labradors theme for AAW is "Life is Best...in Balance." This theme encourages people to reflect and find balance in their daily lives. This balance can be between a persons right to live the life they wish to live and their responsibilities to family, friends, work, etc. Everyone experiences times of stress or grief; however, how we deal with these times differs. It is during such times that people need to know that there are supports available for them to turn to, whether it is a loved one, counsellor, physician or employee assistance program.

Within the province, a continuum of addictions services are provided by the four regional health and community services boards and the two integrated boards. Boards provide a range of services to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with alcohol, drug and gambling problems, including education, prevention and treatment services. Individuals involved in addictions as a profession and those requiring addictions assistance are encouraged to take this week to reflect on the need for balance in their lives.

About 3,500 AAW information kits will be distributed to schools, community centres and businesses throughout the province. In addition, addictions services staff will participate in information sharing sessions in venues such as schools and seniors centres.

AAW has been observed nationally since 1981 to raise awareness concerning issues related to alcohol, other drug abuse and problem gambling behaviors.
