Seniors Month

Roger Grimes, Minister of Health and Community Services, today acknowledged June as Seniors Month. In acknowledgement of Seniors Month, Minister Grimes recommended that we should all take this opportunity to recognize older persons in Newfoundland and Labrador, and show appreciation for all that they have done to enhance our lives and society.

Minister Grimes said: "During 1999, the International Year of the Older Persons (IYOP), the Department of Health and Community Services held several contests to promote intergenerational harmony, and honour the senior citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador. I am pleased to be able to announce at this time the winners of the 32 senior recognition awards, the 14 photo contest winners, as well as the provincial winners of the school essay and poster contests."

Minister Grimes drew particular attention to the provincial award winners. Elizabeth Rich of Davis Inlet was the provincial winner in the seniors recognition award contest. Jillian Croke of St. Brendans, and Danielle Decker of Cow Head and Alison Green of Fortune were the provincial winners in the school essay and poster contests respectively.

Applications for IYOP awards had to be received by the Department of Health and Community Services by December 1999 to be eligible for consideration. All photo contest and

senior recognition award applicants will receive a monetary prize. Regional and provincial seniors recognition award winners were chosen by random draw. First and second place School District winners were also selected in the essay and poster contest, as well as a special award for artistic merit which went to Scott Rich of Davis Inlet. Cheques and certificates will be in the mail to the winners over the coming weeks.

While IYOP has ended, we must all continue to celebrate and acknowledge the older persons of our province.

Seniors Day was celebrated throughout Newfoundland and Labrador on Sunday, June 4. Seniors are also being acknowledged throughout Seniors Week (June 4-10), and throughout the whole month of June which is recognized nationally as Seniors Month.
