New air ambulance for province

Roger Grimes, Minister of Health and Community Services, announced today that $6 million has been approved for the purchase of a King Air 350 air ambulance to replace the older King Air 100. This is in keeping with governments commitment to provide a reliable and efficient air ambulance service for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The King Air 350 is a turbo prop plane which is faster and has a longer range. This will allow for greater distances without having to refuel, resulting in a decrease in travel time for patients. The cabin area of the aircraft is larger than the King Air 100, allowing two stretchered patients to be transported simultaneously as opposed to one. More medical equipment and attendants can be transported in the newer aircraft, and the plane has more flexibility to operate in times of reduced visibility.

"The replacement of the old aircraft with the King Air 350, and its continuation as a government-operated service, will improve the efficiency and reliability of air ambulance services within the province," said Minister Grimes. "The new addition will complement governments current fleet, including a Twin Otter located in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and a Commander in St. Anthony."

The air ambulance service is operated by the Department of Works, Services and Transportation.
