Truck trailers to be marked with reflective tape

The Department of Government Services and Lands is taking another step to improve road safety by requiring all large commercial vehicles to have reflective markings.

This requirement comes into effect on September 1, 2000 for trailers and semi-trailers manufactured on or after December 1, 1993 and January 1, 2002 for those manufactured prior to December 1, 1993.

There will also be a four-month education period beginning September 1. This will give industry time to become familiar with the new requirement and to suitably equip their vehicles.

Minister Ernie McLean said: "Government is responding to public and industry concerns about improving the visibility of these large commercial vehicles. The reflective markings will reduce the risk of collision with such vehicles and give all road users more protection."

This action is in line with continuing efforts to improve truck safety in the province and similar programs are expected to be in place in all provinces by the end of the year.
