Department drafting pre-paid funeral regulations

Ernie McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands, said today that his department is in the process of drafting regulations for pre-paid funerals in Newfoundland and Labrador. Legislation relating to pre-paid funerals was passed during the spring session of the House of Assembly and the new regulations are expected to be in place by the end of October.

Mr. McLean said: "Consumer groups and the industry will be consulted during the process and once the regulations are in place, the Department of Government Services and Lands will licence and regulate funeral homes to sell pre-paid funerals. Consumers will benefit from this measure as all monies paid for pre-paid funerals will be required to be held in trust accounts. As well, a compensation fund will be established to provide a further element of consumer protection."

"This action is in the best interest of the consumer and the industry and I look forward to the new regulations being in place by Fall 2000."
