Project under way to allow vehicle registration renewals over Internet;
Increased highway enforcement in Labrador

Government Services and Lands will immediately begin work on an exciting new information technology project to enable vehicle owners to renew their registrations over the Internet.

Ernie McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands, said today that work on this project is the highlight of his departments budget. Owners currently renew their registrations on an annual basis by mail, through chartered banks, or in person at various departmental offices. Once this project is completed, owners can renew their registrations and pay for the service on-line using the Internet. This project is just one of several information technology initiatives which government will be pursuing this year to provide electronic, on-line services to citizens.*

The minister said another key initiative will be the creation of a new highway enforcement officer position in Labrador. The new Trans Labrador Highway (TLH) and other highway improvement activities in Labrador have resulted in the need for increased enforcement to improve public safety and protect the TLH. Prior to the creation of this position, enforcement was provided on a part-time basis by a staff member shared with the Department of Works, Services and Transportation. Mr. McLean said: "This new position will enable GSL to provide year-round enforcement of regulations relating to legal weights on roads, truck inspections, and transportation of dangerous goods. Increased highway development and increased highway enforcement must go hand in hand."

With respect to general GSL activities, the minister said that department will continue its efforts to provide efficient, cost effective services to its clients; to protect consumers; and to ensure responsible management of our Crown land resources.
