Ministerial Statement
Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods
March 15, 2000
4H Week - March 11 - 17

Mr. Speaker, 4-H members and leaders will celebrate Provincial 4-H Week from March 11 - 17, 2000. 4-H is an international youth organization involving more than seven million members in 80 countries around the world.

This organization has been bringing the youth of Newfoundland and Labrador together since 1937, teaching them leadership, community and life skills.

The Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods is proud to support 4-H through the provision of funding and a departmental support staff who administers the programs and teaches leadership skills.

The province now has 19 4-H clubs involving youth from the ages of 10 to 21 as well as the Junior program for ages five to nine. From 1999 to 2000, membership has increased by 14% and volunteer leadership has increased by 24 per cent due largely to a recruitment drive implemented in 1999.

Mr. Speaker, 4-H members learn public speaking and leadership skills. They have the opportunity to learn through travel and have an excellent scholarship program.

Recently, 33 senior 4-m Members and 12 volunteer 4-H leaders gathered at Max Simms Memorial Camp, Bishops Falls to participate in a 4-H Senior Members Selection Weekend to provide training in interview skills, familiarity with the provincial 4-H program and to select members to travel to various National and International events.

For the past number of years, Newfoundland 4-H has been participating in Japans youth program, LABO Exchange. This summer, they will play host to 16 Japanese students between the ages of 12 and 16 and one Japanese chaperone.

Mr. Speaker, the following scholarships will be awarded this year to Newfoundland 4-H members to assist with post secondary education costs:

  • The Co-operators 4-H Scholarship
  • Harvest Trust 4-H Scholarship
  • Farm Credit Corporation 4-H Scholarship
  • Ivomec 4-H Scholarship

Plans are now under way to offer an outdoor experiential and educational program set at a wilderness camp site, Camp Nipper, Gambo. Provincial 4-H Council will hire a Camp Administrator and summer students to fill staff positions for approximately eight weeks during the summer and members from all across the province will participate.

4-H members will be canvassing door to door promoting the 4-H program and describing the benefits and opportunities it offers the young people of our communities.

In closing, Mr. Speaker, I urge the Honourable Members of the House to support their local 4-H Clubs. In doing so, they are supporting the leaders of tomorrow.

Thank-you Mr. Speaker
