Agricultural festivals big attraction again in 2000

The numerous agriculture festivals held throughout the province are proving to be very popular once again in 2000, attracting thousands of people to events throughout the province. "This year, as in the past, these festivals have been family-oriented affairs highlighted by a number fun-filled gatherings which focus the publics attention on the contribution the agriculture and agrifoods industry makes to rural parts of the province," said Kevin Aylward, the minister responsible for agriculture and agrifoods in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Recent events such as the Brigus Blueberry Festival and the Farmers Field Day and Open House in St. Johns confirm there is a growing interest in these agricultural related events. The 42nd Farmers Field Day alone attracted over 6,500 people," said Aylward.

Aylward pointed out the growth in the popularity of these events is largely the result of much hard work by volunteers. "It is the hundreds of volunteers throughout the province who deserve much of the credit for the promotion and staging of these events and festivals. Support from agriculture and agrifood staff, industry associations and community groups have enabled volunteers to provide tours, assemble exhibits and displays and organize children's games and activities. I take my hat off to everyone, including local businesses, who through their generous contributions make these events possible."

Many festivals have already been held throughout the province including the Beach Pea Festival at Salmon Cove, the Labrador Bakeapple Folk Festival in LAnse au Loup and the Strawberry Festival in the Humber Valley. In addition, there are a number of other agricultural festivals and farmer field days still to take place in coming weeks. Minister Aylward encourages everyone to get out and participate and learn more about our provinces agriculture industry.

A complete list of all festival dates and locations is available on the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods web site at www.gov.nl.ca/agric .
