Minister extends congratulations to Corner Brook Pulp and Paper

The minister responsible for forestry in Newfoundland and Labrador, Kevin Aylward, offered congratulations today to Corner Brook Pulp and Paper on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the pulp and paper mill in Corner Brook.

"The contribution this company has made to the economic and social fabric of this province, particularly western Newfoundland, over the past 75 years is immeasurable. Corner Brook Pulp and Paper through its woodlands operations, power plant facilities and paper mill currently provides direct employment for approximately 1,300 people and indirect employment for 3,000 people," said Aylward. "Since commencing operations in the early 1920s dozens of communities in western Newfoundland have relied on the pulp and paper mill in Corner Brook as the key to their very existence. Community organizations, service groups and sports teams to name a few have all benefited from their relationship with Kruger."

Aylward noted that Corner Brook Pulp and Paper has implemented a number of policies over the years that have improved the operations efficiency while demonstrating their commitment to sustaining the environment. "Corner Brook Pulp and Paper has been extremely vigilant in its efforts to address environmental concerns. Action taken to reduce emissions and treat waste materials have required an investment of millions of dollars," said Aylward. "Their commitment to protecting wildlife which comprises a critical component of the forest ecosystem is also significant. As a member of the pine marten working group they have made a significant contribution toward protecting this endangered species in this province. In fact, the working group comprised of various forest stakeholders recently received a national award for their efforts in this regard. As well, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper has taken a lead role in having the Main River designated as a Canadian Heritage River."

The strong working relationship the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has had with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper holds tremendous promise for the future according to Minister Aylward. "Over the years the Newfoundland Forest Service has worked with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper to implement responsible forest management techniques and strategies with the goal of improving the sustainability of the forest resource," he said. "Combining resources in such areas as silviculture and forest protection will help address concerns over timber supply. As well, a cooperative effort will enable the provinces comprehensive forest ecosystem approach to be implemented in an effective manner."
