Minister acknowledges contribution of Dr. Muhammad Nazir in
promoting forestry in Newfoundland and Labrador

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Kevin Aylward today extended congratulations to Dr. Muhammad Nazir, Assistant Deputy Minister of Forestry, on receiving the Canadian Institute of Forestry Canadian Forestry Achievement Award. Dr. Nazir was presented the award earlier this week at the Canadian Institute of Forestry National Conference taking place in Corner Brook.

"Since joining the Newfoundland Forest Service in 1976 Dr. Nazir has played an integral role in the development, shaping and growth of the forest industry in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Aylward. "Dr. Nazir through his wealth of knowledge and expertise has lead the change toward the development of a new forest management direction for Newfoundland and Labrador. Due in large part to his work, the province today employs a sustainable ecosystem approach toward forest management."

Aylward also pointed out that the province has experienced growth in various aspects of the forest industry during Dr. Nazirs tenure as assistant deputy minister. "There has been great progress made in the wood products industry, sawmilling and pulp and paper industry," said Aylward. "Despite facing challenges each of these industries has experienced considerable growth and has made a significant contribution to the economy of this province. It is through the assistance and direction provided by Dr. Nazir that stakeholders in these industries have been able to overcome obstacles and develop these parts of the forest sector."

On a personal level Aylward noted his association with Dr. Nazir since undertaking the forestry portfolio has been a positive experience. "Dr. Nazirs involvement in various aspects of the forest industry at both the provincial and national level has given him great insight into the direction of the forest issues across this country. In this respect, the assistance he has provided to me in my capacity as minister has been invaluable. It is clear to see why the Canadian Institute of Foresters selected him for this prestigious achievement award."
