Lightning causes forest fires in Labrador

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, expresses concern about the number of forest fires in Labrador.

"At this point in time there are 75 fires, of which 63 are active, as lightning storms continue to plague Labrador. This is a record number of fires over the past 10 years. Forest fire personnel are actively fighting 13 of these fires. Efforts are being concentrated in the most high priority areas of Labrador. Additional resources have been pressed into service and we are hopeful that we can avoid major losses of our forests. In addition to ground crews, four water bombers, four helicopters and two Cessna are being used to combat the fires," stated Mr. Aylward.

Fires are being fought at Susan River, Ten Mile Point and Salmon Pond. Staff are monitoring fires at Switchback Lake, Goose River, Metchin River, Menihek Lake, Crossroads Lake, Sawbill Siding, Yetmans Pond, Beaver Brook South, Ten Mile Pond and Salmon Pond.

The department is anticipating more fires due to lightning as the forecast calls for high temperatures with more thunder and lightning in Labrador.

The minister noted: "Due to the resources we have in the region we are able to provide a quick initial attack with the water bombers, followed up with choppers and ground crews. The two Cesna are used to monitor fires and determine priorities. Although we have the situation under control I want to remind the general public to be careful when working or travelling in the outdoors."
