Becoming an Outdoors Women Program set to start for 2000

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced today that the first Becoming an Outdoors Women (BOW) program for 2000 in Newfoundland and Labrador is set to commence. This outdoor skills training program, which is open to women 18 years of age and older, will be held at the Lavrock Centre, Salmonier Line from June 9 - 11.

"This program provides women with a great opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and acquire the knowledge and build the skills that will enhance their outdoor experience," said Aylward. "BOW is designed to remove barriers and build strong earth connections in a relaxed and supportive environment."

This program has been very successful with an average of 100 participants and 30 instructors and volunteers attending each workshop to date. The Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods is the primary sponsor of the Becoming an Outdoors Women program, however, tremendous support has also been received from local businesses, organizations and volunteers. This community support has been a key ingredient in making BOW a success.

During the BOW weekend, participants have an opportunity to learn about a variety of activities such as kayaking, canoeing, outdoor survival, plant identification and proper use of a rifle and shotgun. The cost of registration is $145. This includes two nights accommodations, seven meals, all instruction and use of demonstration equipment. Local organizations and businesses also offer scholarships which are available for single mothers or students who may require financial assistance.
