Silviculture funding announced for Roddickton area

Brian Tobin, Premier and MHA - The Straits-White Bay North, announced funding in the amount of $313,500 has been made available for a major silviculture project near Roddickton. The premier made the announcement in conjunction with the Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Kevin Aylward. The funding has been made available through the provincial governments Silviculture Program.

"The forest industry provides a significant contribution to the economy in Newfoundland and Labrador particularly in rural areas such as the Northern Peninsula," said Premier Tobin. "Tree planting and thinning activity provide a valuable and consistent source of employment for hundreds of individuals in several communities throughout the province each year."

Minister Aylward said: "Investing in the future of our provincial forest resource through the planting of tree seedlings is an integral component of the Newfoundland Forest Services responsible approach to sustainable forest management. Silviculture activity helps enhance the provincial wood supply ensuring sources of fibre are available for the future."

It is anticipated the project will create employment for 25 persons over a period of 16 weeks. Activity will take place in the areas of Coles Pond, Phils Road and Sail Pond. Plans include the planting of approximately 550,500 seedlings over an area of 500 ha as well as undertaking pre-commercial thinning activity on 350 ha of forest.
