Agriculture - Disaster Relief Program

The province has committed to participate in the National Income Disaster Program for farmers. With provincial participation on a 60/40 cost-shared basis, the $900 million federal investment will be boosted to $1.5 billion over the next two years.

The Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Kevin Aylward, said: "We anticipate the total contribution to farmers in Newfoundland and Labrador could be as high as $1.5 million over two years, based on federal government estimates. Newfoundland crop farmers and hog farmers, in particular, will benefit from this program."

"All farmers in Newfoundland and Labrador, who experienced a dramatic decline in incomes over the past year because of falling commodity prices, or other factors beyond their control, are eligible to apply for assistance. The agrifoods industry employs up to 4,000 people annually and has great potential for further growth in local, national, and international marketplaces, and can count on the continued support of the provincial government," said Mr. Aylward.
