4-H Week, March 11-17

On March 13, Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, met with local 4-H members from the Brookfield Road 4-H Club to sign a proclamation declaring March 11-17, 2000 as provincial 4-H Week. Present at the signing were 4-H members Kayla Walsh and Sarah Ruby, Minister Aylward and Mary Lester, representative of 4-H Provincial Council.

4-H is a youth program designed to encourage the development of citizenship, public speaking, skill and leadership development in members between the ages of 10-21. There is also available a junior program for children between the ages of five and nine. Members of all ages participate in fun activities and project meetings, anything from cooking to crafts, dairy to nature detectives and woodworking to small engine repair. These project meetings are facilitated by adult volunteer leaders and oftentimes the meetings take place in the leaders home. Senior 4-H members, 16 and over also have the opportunity to participate in travel programs. Every year, Provincial Council selects members to represent Newfoundland and Labrador at Atlantic, national and international conferences, exchanges and seminars.

4-H members from all over the province, from the tip of the Northern Peninsula to the Avalon Peninsula, will be celebrating 4-H Week by participating in special activities and canvassing door to door promoting the value of 4-H and the positive effect it has on young people in our communities.
