Wildlife violations On January 11, two individuals from the Bay of Islands pleaded guilty in a Corner Brook court to a number of charges under the Wildlife Act and the Guides Regulations including the following: lending a big game licence to another person This incident began in the fall of 1998 after the two men hosted an illegal moose hunting trip for two residents of Illinois, USA. Officials from the Forestry and Wildlife Division, as well as agents from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, conducted a joint investigation which resulted in all four individuals being charged in their respective countries. Tom Childs of Lark Harbour, NF and Kenneth Tiller of York Harbour, NF, received a total of $6000 in fines and 10 years of big game hunting prohibitions. Mr. Childs will also lose his guide licence for a period of three years. Mike Gleason and Keith Hartong, both of Illionois State, U.S.A, were fined $1500 each and had their trophy head mounts confiscated by U.S. authorities. The business of illegal outfitting and guiding has been an increasing problem in Newfoundland in recent years. It is hoped that the significant penalties imposed by the courts will serve as a powerful deterrent to those who think they can profit from illegal use of our wildlife resources.
