Forestry violations

Investigations conducted by conservation officers at the local forestry/wildlife office at Paddys Pond have resulted in fines being levied against five individuals. Violations range from cutting without a permit to operating a sawmill without a licence.

Preston Stringer, 29, of Holyrood was convicted on September 15, 1999 for cutting without a permit and fined $500. Jeffrey Warford, 35, of Holyrood and James Mercer, 25, of Kelligrews were also convicted on January 27, 2000 in relation to the same incident. Mr Warford received a fine of $500 while Mr Mercer, who had a previous conviction, was fined $1,000.

Gary Cook, 44, of Torbay was convicted on February 9, 2000 for operating a sawmill without a licence and fined $350.

Charles Dawe, 52, of Seal Cove was convicted on January 27, 2000 for operating a sawmill without a licence and fined $200.

Gordon Cooper, 63, of Mount Pearl was convicted on January 12, 2000 for cutting without a permit and fined $75.

The public are reminded that in order to operate a sawmill in the province a licence must first be obtained. To cut timber on Crown land a permit must also first be obtained, both of which are issued by the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods. If individuals are cutting on private land they must be able to provide proof of land ownership or have written permission from the land owner. For further information contact your local forestry/wildlife office.
