Premier Tulk to retain Aboriginal Affairs portfolio

Premier Beaton Tulk is pleased to announce that he will be the Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs. The premier is retaining the portfolio to ensure that important government efforts in this area continue to be addressed by the provinces leader.

"It is important that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador continue to move forward in the area of Aboriginal Affairs," said Premier Tulk. "By keeping responsibility for the portfolio with the position of premier, government is ensuring that critical initiatives such as land claims are administered at the appropriate level."

Premier Tulk said he wants to ensure that Labrador residents and Aboriginal groups understand governments high-level commitment in this area. He said that residents who are concerned about the leadership of the portfolio should be reassured that business will be conducted in a manner consistent with the recent Tobin administration.

"From an administrative standpoint, the team which has been leading the Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat will remain the same, including the position of premier as lead minister," said the premier. "Minister Ernest McLean, who I have enjoyed working with over the past number of years, will carry on with his responsibilities as Minister Responsible for Labrador and I look forward to collaborating with him in my new role.

"It is important to assure all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, particularly our Aboriginal people, that this government will continue to work and consult with Aboriginals and Labradorians as we have in recent history."
