Youth Forum 2000 slated for Central Region,
November 10 to 12

The provinces Strategic Social Plan Central Region Steering Committee (CRSC), in partnership with Futures in Newfoundland and Labradors Youth (FINALY!), is hosting Central Newfoundland Youth Forum 2000, November 10-12 at the Lion Max Simms Camp.

Susan Hanlon, Youth Forum 2000 coordinator said: "Youth Forum 2000 promises to be an exciting and educational opportunity for youth in our area, and both partners are excited about the possibilities that the forum will provide to them.

"Everyone is putting their energies toward the success of the forum, which, for both partners, means that participants will take away a sense that they can make a difference in their communities by taking responsibility for themselves and their resulting successes."

The forums focus is to enhance leadership skills and volunteer interests in the regions youth, and promote Newfoundland- and Labrador-based career opportunities. The content of the forum is drawn from the CRSCs project "Building Community Capacity Through Partnerships." In that project, the CRSC works with communities of 500 or fewer residents that have high levels of out-migration and unemployment and low levels of income to build more comprehensive profiles of those communities and, thereby, enable citizens to assess what can be done to strengthen them.

CRSC executive director Heather Hillier said: "There is a definite link between leadership and community development issues. Strengthening people in a community has proven to have a positive effect overall in the community and on service delivery. Our broad-based goal for Building Community Capacity Through Partnerships is to encourage and reinforce community partnership and ownership of decision. Youth Forum 2000 is one of the ways of strengthening community and fostering ownership of decisions."

FINALY!s primary mandate is to explore and share opportunities for youth so that young people can develop the skills and obtain the experience necessary to become entrepreneurs and develop careers for themselves in the province.

The provinces Strategic Social Plan grew out of province-wide consultations with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is an approach to community development that links both social and economic challenges faced by communities.
