Tom Lush sworn-in as government house leader

Tom Lush, MHA - Terra Nova, was sworn in today by Lieutenant-Governor Dr. A.M. House as government house leader at a ceremony at Government House.

"I am pleased to have Mr. Lush in a leadership position within government," said Premier Beaton Tulk. "His legislative experience will serve this administration well as he takes on the role of government house leader. He has a long and distinguished record of public service and is an expert in parliamentary procedure."

The premier also announced that Mr. Lush will chair the newly formed Legislative and Regulatory Reform Committee, consisting of Ministers Julie Bettney, Sandra Kelly, Lloyd Matthews and Ernie McLean.

"Government will, through this committee, continue its efforts to cut red tape and ensure its regulations do not undermine the development of our economy, especially our small businesses," said the premier. "This will be approached without compromising legitimate public policy imperatives such as the protection of the environment and workplace health and safety."

The committee will identify regulatory red tape barriers to job creation and business growth and will propose solutions to eliminate, reduce or streamline these barriers immediately and over the longer term while protecting the general public interest at the same time, the premier added.

Mr. Lushs experience includes 14 years as a teacher, as well as many years in the provincial legislature. He was first elected to represent the District of Terra Nova in 1975 and re-elected in 1979 and 1982. In 1985, he re-entered public life as the member for Bonavista North after teaching in St. Johns for two years. He was re-elected in 1989 and served as speaker of the House of Assembly. In 1993, he was once again re-elected and named Minister of Social Services. He was also vice chair of the Public Accounts Committee and chair of the Select Committee on No Fault Insurance when the House dissolved in 1996. In 1996, he returned to the House as the representative of the District of Terra Nova. He currently serves as vice chair of the Public Accounts Committee.
