Minister participates in conference on francophone affairs

Walter Noel, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, joined Sheila Copps, federal Minister of Canadian Heritage, and representatives from other provincial and territorial governments at the fifth Ministerial Conference on Francophone Affairs. The forum took place in Stanley Bridge, Prince Edward Island on October 12 and 13 .

"The conference committed to increase the visibility of the fancophone and Acadian communities within our respective jurisdictions," said Minister Noel. "Participating in this meeting was another way our government demonstrates its commitment to encourage more dialogue and collaboration between francophones and government to ensure that the rich, cultural heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador is secured and enhanced and best efforts are made as we go forward.

"Our government has been very active in maintaining a positive working relationship with the Francophone and Acadian community in Newfoundland and Labrador. Several of the suggestions made at the conference to encourage a vital and strong francophone presence in this country have already been implemented by our provincial government and we will continue this mandate."

In 1999, the province proclaimed la Journe provinciale de Francophonie which highlights the valued contribution of francophones in the province. Most recently, the Chorale de lAssociation Francophone were invited to perform at the Vikings!1000 years celebrations at LAnse aux Meadows in July. A senior official within the Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat is dedicated to francophone issues while the French Services Unit, with support from the federal government, provides French language training, translation and community liaison services to government departments.

"There are other initiatives we are working on," continued Noel. "We are seeking to improve tourism in this province from a francophone perspective, as well as increase capacity for francophone users on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Web site as an added way of encouraging better interaction with all members of the public."
