proclaimed September 18-22, as National Payroll Week "Workers across the province, indeed the country, depend on payroll professionals to issue their pay in a timely manner and often we take for granted that our paycheques will be ready when we expect them," said Minister Thistle. "National Payroll Week gives us the opportunity to recognize the work ethic and excellence of payroll professionals, and the changing environment in which they work. In government, and in private enterprise, emerging technologies and changing structures provide daily challenges to these dedicated individuals." National Payroll Week is sponsored by the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) along with key payroll product and service providers. The CPA provides payroll leadership and advocacy on behalf of 6,600 members in Canada and abroad and supports five regional offices. PROCLAMATION WHEREAS The 6th Annual National Payroll Week will take place from September 18 to 22, 2000; and WHEREAS The objective of National Payroll Week is to educate the public on the vital role these professionals play in the workforce; and WHEREAS Complex government legislation, emerging technologies and a changing workplace make payroll increasingly indicate and require the payroll professional to constantly upgrade knowledge and skills and maintain a standard of professional excellence; and WHEREAS Payroll professionals collect billions of dollars in taxes and withholdings on behalf of the federal and provincial governments and then produce 14 million T4s each year; and WHEREAS Workers across Canada count on payroll professionals to deduct taxes and withholdings accurately and issue their pay in a timely manner; and WHEREAS Employers across Canada depend on their payroll professionals to maintain a timely, accurate payrolls to prevent government penalties and other costly errors; and WHEREAS National Payroll Week is sponsored by The Canadian Payroll Association together with a cross-section of payroll industry suppliers who cast aside competitiveness each year and unite to boost the profile of the payroll professional, NOW, THEREFORE, I, Anna Thistle, President of The Treasury Board, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, do hereby proclaim the week of September 18 to 22, 2000 NATIONAL PAYROLL WEEK In Newfoundland and Labrador and urge all residents, workers and employers to lend their support.
