NLIS 3 August 1, 2000 (Executive Council) Minister to address SEMACA conference Walter Noel, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, will be the keynote speaker August 3 at a luncheon during the Annual Conference of the Southeastern Massachusetts Atlantic Canada Association (SEMACA) of municipal representatives being hosted by the town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, August 2 - 4. "Newfoundland and Labrador and New England have enjoyed good relations for centuries. We are now building on these historic ties to develop new opportunities," said Minister Noel. "We live in a world where time and distance have been eliminated by technology, and obstacles to trade with our American neighbours have been reduced through the Free Trade Agreement. Our government has developed a number of initiatives to ensure we make the most of the possibilities, including our New England Trade and Investment Strategy, Team Canada Atlantic trade missions to the area, and increased participation in cross-border organizations. Happy Valley-Goose Bays success in being chosen to host this conference contributes to our strategy. I congratulate the mayor and councillors on their leadership." The SEMACA Conference was held in Quincy, Massachusetts last year. Dr. Anthony Cicerone, Ph. D., professor of Economics and Canadian Studies at the Bridgewater State College, and President of the Canada/New England Business Council, is executive director of the association. The Canadian Consul General for New England, Mary Clancy, Industry, Trade and Technology Minister Sandra Kelly, and Government Services Minister Ernest McLean are also participating in the conference.
