Premier comments on Raymond Squires appointment to the Senate

Brian Tobin, Premier and M.H.A. for The Straits and White Bay North, today expressed pleasure on hearing of the Prime Ministers appointment of Raymond Squires, C.M., to the Senate.

"Mr. Squires embodies the true spirit of Newfoundland and Labrador ingenuity and entrepreneurship. His work and dedication over the years to the community of St. Anthony and surrounding areas were critical to the modern-day development of the town," said Premier Tobin.

In addition to managing his business interests, Mr. Squires served for 20 years on the St. Anthony Town Council and was a key player in modernizing infrastructure in the town. His dedication to the community was demonstrated by his volunteer work with the local Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, the Grenfell Regional Health Services and youth sports. In 1997, he was inducted into the Order of Canada.

Mr. Squires appointment to the Senate brings to six the number of senators representing Newfoundland and Labrador. The vacancy was created in November 1999 when Senator Derek Lewis retired.
