Senior appointments

Premier Brian Tobin today announced several senior appointments within the public service.

Gerald Galway will assume the position of assistant deputy minister (acting), advanced studies, with the Department of Education. Mr. Galway comes to the position from his post as director of corporate planning and research within the department, but most recently he served as executive secretary to the Ministerial Panel on Education Delivery in the Classroom.

Victor Janes has been appointed as assistant deputy minister (acting), tourism and recreation, with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. He served most recently as executive director, special celebrations with the department, and prior to that held the position of director with the recreation and sport division.

Doreen McCarthy has been appointed to the new position of director of arts and culture centres with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Her role will be to ensure dynamic programming and enhance community input at the the six arts and culture centres in the province.

GERALD GALWAY

Gerald Galway began his career in the education system as a teacher in 1978. Over the years he has held a number of positions related to education, science and technology. He came to government in 1990 as a consultant with the Department of Education, and has held various positions over the years including: manager of the educational indicators section, and manager and then director with the Corporate Planning and Research Division. Over the past number of months he has served as the executive secretary to the Ministerial Panel on Educational Delivery in the Classroom. Mr. Galway holds a Master of Science from the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University, as well as a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Science, also from Memorial.

VICTOR JANES

Victor Janes began his career as a physical education teacher in 1965. His involvement in sports and recreation led him to positions with both the City of Corner Brook and the City of St. John�s within their parks and recreation departments. He came to government in 1986 as a supervisor in the fitness section of the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs. From there he moved to the job of director of the recreation and sport division with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and most recently had been seconded as executive director with the Special Celebrations unit in that department. Mr. Janes holds a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Physical Education from Memorial University.

DOREEN McCARTHY
Appointed as
Director, Arts and Culture Centres
Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation

Doreen McCarthy has been involved in the arts community since 1987 when she became the general manager of Rising Tide Theatre in St. John�s. Over the years she has worked in a number of fields including arts administration, arts marketing and promotions, fund development and consumer affairs. Before joining the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, her most recent position was as executive director of the Resource Centre for the Arts in St. John�s. Ms. McCarthy holds a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University.
