Premier announces infrastructure improvements and beautification projects in the
LAnse aux Meadows area in preparation for Vikings Celebrations

Premier Brian Tobin today announced $500,000 for infrastructure improvements and special beautification initiatives in the LAnse aux Meadows area in preparation for the Viking celebrations.

"Thousands of visitors are preparing to come to Newfoundland and Labrador to participate in the Viking celebrations. Central to these festivities will be a visit to the only authenticated Viking settlement in North America," said Premier Tobin. "We have spent the past two years preparing for these celebrations from the development of a province-wide program to the recruiting of the many volunteers that will ensure the events are well-executed. The final component is infrastructure improvements and beautification initiatives in the LAnse aux Meadows area to ensure the thousands of visitors to the region have a positive experience."

Premier Tobin added: "A visitors first impression of an area is often the lasting impression. We must show the world that the Great Northern Peninsula has a spectacular natural environment as well as a long exciting history."

The following initiatives will begin almost immediately to ensure completion prior to the beginning of the celebrations in the region in July.

Resurfacing of road through St. Lunaire-Griquet

Brush clearing - The clearing of brush along the roadside between the airport at Hare Bay and St. Anthony as well as other identified sections of Route 430.

Roadside and community beautification (Route 436 to LAnse aux Meadows) - This includes brush cutting and garbage and waste removal along the roadside.

Improvements to walking trails, municipal park and removal of car wrecks in the area.

Installation of new signage along Routes 430 and 436 leading to LAnse aux Meadows.

Wharf upgrade - The wharf in the town of LAnse aux Meadows will be upgraded to accommodate the Viking ship fleet and the ongoing cruise ship visits to the region.

"I encourage all residents of the area to become involved in the beautification efforts. It is our time to put our best foot forward. These improvements will begin within a couple of weeks and result in 420 person weeks of employment with local area residents being given the first opportunity for jobs," said Tobin.
