Minister pleased with postal break

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Walter Noel said he is pleased with a recent announcement by Canada Post Corporation to lower postal rates for certain communities in northern Newfoundland and southern Labrador.

"We are pleased to see Canada Post take this important first step in addressing concerns about exorbitant postal rates in northern areas of this province," said Minister Noel.

Minister Noel, along with Labrador MHAs Ernest McLean, Yvonne Jones and Wally Andersen, met with the federal minister responsible for Canada Post Corporation, Alfonso Gagliano, on February 15, 2000, in Ottawa to express concerns about the postal rates in northern Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The minister obviously agreed with our concerns, and we are pleased to see such timely action," noted Minister Noel. "MHA Yvonne Jones worked diligently to express the views of her district and should be commended for her efforts. Now, we must continue to focus on the broader issue of postal rates in the rest of coastal Labrador, which remain unacceptably high. We look forward to further progress with Canada Post on this issue."
