Minister announces major IT initiatives

Treasury Board President Anna Thistle announced today that the Information Technology Management Division of Treasury Board has been allocated $250,000 in this years budget to assist departments across government to enhance their sites on the World Wide Web. "This is an important initiative for government," said Thistle. "In addition to providing local Internet users with information, our Web site becomes a stronger global ambassador for our province every day. It is beneficial for the government to offer enhanced and modern Web services for the ever growing number of Internet users."

In addition to improving governments information on the Web, funds are being allocated for Treasury Board to provide for secure credit card transactions over the Internet. This has a number of potential uses. One such example of the service will be with the Department of Government Services and Lands Web site. "Plans are in place so vehicle owners will have the on-line option of registering their vehicles and paying for the service at the same time," continued Thistle. "This new initiative requires credit card transactions and a secure system needs to be in place before we can offer the service." The Department of Government Services and Lands has issued a release with further details on their project.

Several government services are already accessible via the Internet including Student Aid information, Highway Driving Conditions Report, electronic tendering and tourism information. This initiative intends to expand this service. Government departments are placing considerable priority on improving the publics access to government program information over the Internet. "The ongoing information technology changes are revolutionizing the way people do business every day. These changes are eliminating geographical boundaries and giving rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador an equal footing," Thistle said. "During the recent Jobs and Growth sessions, the committee heard about the importance of developing the IT industry. Government believes that it should lead by example. That is part of the reason why these changes are being made to help meet the needs of everyone in the province. The ability to deliver government services through the Internet will minimize geographical barriers and improve the public access to information on government programs."

A government wide review of electronic service delivery opportunities was recently sponsored by the Treasury Board Secretariat. This identified vehicle renewal as a priority as well as partnering opportunities with the federal government. "Increasing interest and demand from departments and the public is expected with respect to the electronic delivery of services and information."
