Premier pleased with extension of veterans benefits

Premier Brian Tobin said today that he is pleased to see that the federal government will table legislation to extend veterans benefits to all civilian groups who served overseas in close support of the war effort, especially the members of the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit.

"I am glad that civilians who gave of themselves for their country will finally be recognized for their efforts," said Premier Tobin. "We owe them a debt of gratitude, and the extension of these benefits is a fitting tribute. The Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit, especially, played an integral part in the war effort. More than 3,600 experienced loggers from this province spent the war years cutting timber in Scotland, allowing vital coal production to be increased in Britain."

Members of the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit already have access to income-tested veterans benefits programs. Todays announcement will give them access to Veterans Affairs Canada disability pensions and additional health care benefits.

Other groups which will also enjoy expanded veterans program benefits as a result of this legislation include: the Ferry Command, the Corps of (Civilian) Canadian Fire Fighters, and Canadian members of the Overseas Welfare Workers.
