Intergovernmental ministers discuss federal/provincial issues

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Walter Noel met with his federal counterpart for two hours yesterday. "Stphane Dion and I discussed many issues of special interest to our province, including health care financing, problems with our employment insurance system, inadequacies in Canadas equalization program, difficulties in the air transportation industry, fuel prices, St. Johns harbour pollution, northern postal rates, and environmental remediation in Stephenville," said the minister.

Minister Noel said Dion also informed him that the constitutional amendment necessary to change our provinces name would be passed before the end of the year. "Clearly, we had hoped this matter would be resolved more quickly. I am, nevertheless, confident that Minister Dion is committed to dealing with this matter as quickly as possible."

Noel also assured Dion of the provinces support for the Clarity Act now before Parliament.
