Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Forest Mgmt District 1 Amendment (Southern Shore Areas)

Proponent: Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods

The proponent proposes an amendment to the five-year operating plan for Forest Management District 1, which is located on the Avalon Peninsula. The proposed amendment is for four areas on the Southern Shore, one of which is near the forestry station between Cape Broyle and Calvert, near Hell Hill Pond, in an area north of Renews in an area known locally as Renews Track, and in an area north of Fermeuse near Riverhead Pond. The proposed amendment is for domestic timber cutting over a 1,065 hectare area. The undertaking was registered on August 16, 2000; public comments are due on September 20, 2000; and the minister's decision is due on September 30, 2000.

Portugal Cove to Pouch Cove East Coast Trail (Hiking)
Proponent: East Coast Trail Association

The proponent plans to create a 43 kilometre extension of the East Coast Trail from Portugal Cove to Pouch Cove to upgrade an existing trail system and create a continuous permanent hiking trail. Physical features of the undertaking will include board walks, stairs, and bridges, which will be installed at sites that may be degraded by overuse. The undertaking was registered on August 16, 2000; public comments are due on September 20, 2000; and the minister's decision is due on September 30, 2000.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED FROM ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT:

The minister has released the following project from environmental assessment as per requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act:

Harbour Breton Blue Mussel (Fish) Processing Facility
