Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED

Snowmobile Trail - Raleigh Area, Northern Peninsula
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Snowmobile Federation

The proponent plans to develop a 26 kilometer long snowmobile trail in the Raleigh area, on the Northern Peninsula. The proposed trail will be six meters wide and will form an extension to the Newfoundland Integrated Snowmobile Trail. The undertaking was registered on April 28, 2000; public comments are due on June 3, 2000; and the minister's decision is due on June 12, 2000.

Forest Management District 17 Amend Doctor�s Brook, Ten Mile Lake (Resubmission)
Proponent: Newfoundland Forest Service

The proponent proposes an amendment to the five year operating plan for Forest Management District 17 which is located on the southern half of the Great Northern Peninsula. The proposed amendment is for four areas near Doctor's Brook, Ten Mile Lake, Kellys Pond and Mooney Block. The amendment is to harvest timber that has suffered heavy defoliation and mortality from the hemlock looper or is wind thrown and overmature. The plan amendment proposes the harvesting of approximately 37,866 cubic meters of timber over a 698 hectare area and the construction of approximately 5.2 kilometers of roads. The original amendment, dated November 18, 1999, has been cancelled and replaced by the current plan which includes revised plans for the Doctor�s Brook area. The undertaking was registered on May 2, 2000; public comments are due on June 3, 2000; and the minister's decision is due on June 16, 2000.
