NLIS 4 April 26, 2000 (Environment and Labour) Environmental Assessment Bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item. NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED: Labrador City Carol Project Tailings
Management Plan The proponent is proposing to construct a dyke to confine tailings on the western side of Wabush Lake. The dyke will be 15 kms in length, have a two metre freeboard, be approximately 20m in width and will enclose an area of approximately 32 sqkm, including the existing tailings area. Tailings entering the dyked area will be flocculated to reduce the levels of suspended particulates and increase water clarity. The proposed project is intended to meet the 50-year mine life storage requirements. Construction scheduled to begin in May 2001, will see five sections of dyke constructed in stages and be completed in 2010. The undertaking was registered on April 26, 2000; public comments are due on May 26, 2000; and the minister's decision is due on June 10, 2000.
