Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Labrador City Carol Project Tailings Management Plan
Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada

The proponent is proposing to construct a dyke to confine tailings on the western side of Wabush Lake. The dyke will be 15 kms in length, have a two metre freeboard, be approximately 20m in width and will enclose an area of approximately 32 sqkm, including the existing tailings area. Tailings entering the dyked area will be flocculated to reduce the levels of suspended particulates and increase water clarity. The proposed project is intended to meet the 50-year mine life storage requirements. Construction scheduled to begin in May 2001, will see five sections of dyke constructed in stages and be completed in 2010. The undertaking was registered on April 26, 2000; public comments are due on May 26, 2000; and the minister's decision is due on June 10, 2000.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED FROM ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT:

The minister has released the following projects from environmental assessment as per requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act:

Chapel Arm Sheep Abattoir
Proponent: Little Gut Sheep Farm

Glovertown South Horticultural Peat Quarry
Proponent: Feltham's Construction Ltd.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
