Preliminary results released in gull mortality investigation

Provincial veterinarian Dr. Hugh Whitney has released the results of recent tests conducted on a small number of dead birds found in the St. Johns area. The tests reveal levels of a pesticide known as fensulfothion (Dasanit) which is an agricultural pesticide previously used by farmers for root maggot control.

While the results are only preliminary, Dr. Whitney cautions they must be considered as a possible cause for the recent bird deaths in the area. Other causes such as botulism are still being considered.

Officials believe the source is localized to the city landfill. A container possibly containing fensulfothion has been linked with the Robin Hood Bay site. The area in which this container was disturbed has since been covered and access has been restricted.

Occupational Health and Safety Officers have met with workers at the site and informed them of the situation.

Fensulfothion naturally breaks down over a relatively short period of time from as little as two days up to four months.

In general, no pesticide should be disposed of in this manner. Unwanted household pesticides should be taken to a household hazardous waste day for proper disposal. Farmers who have unwanted agricultural pesticides should contact the Department of Environment and Labour for advice on proper disposal.

The rate of bird mortality has decreased in recent days. To date, between 700 and 800 birds have been collected. People are advised to refrain from touching sick or dead birds and are asked to contact the Canadian Wildlife Service at (709) 772-2083.
