Funding approved for environmental remediation work

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, announced today that $800,000 has been allocated in the 2000/2001 Budget for continued environmental remediation work at various sites in the province.

Funding has been approved for environmental remediation activities at several locations in the province, including the removal of PCBs and PCB-contaminated material from storage sites to destruction facilities on the mainland. This material has been held in safe storage and will now be disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner. The initial focus of the work this year will be to complete removal of PCB material from sites in the Baie Verte and St. Anthony areas.

"Government is committed to continued environmental improvement," said Minister Langdon. "This funding will enable us to continue our efforts to cleanup contaminated sites and improve environmental conditions for people living in these areas."
