March 22, 2000 (Environment and Labour) Funding approved to enhance environmental protection services Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, announced today that $495,000 has been allocated in the 2000/2001 Budget for five new positions and associated operating expenditures within the Environment Branch of the department. This funding will be used to expand services and programs in the areas of toxicology, environmental monitoring, waste management and in the provision of education and training to municipalities in their efforts to address levels of trihalomethanes (THMs) in municipal water supplies. Minister Langdon stated that the additional funding for environmental programs demonstrates government�s overall commitment to environmental protection. Minister Langdon said: "In the months ahead, we will recruit an environmental monitoring specialist, experts in various aspects of waste management, and a toxicologist. We have already started the recruitment process for an engineer dedicated to assisting municipalities deal with the issue of THMs in municipal water supplies." The minister stated that his department will continue to work closely with municipalities and other stakeholders to address environmental issues in the province.
