Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Sunnyside to Come By Chance Refinery Transmission Line
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro

The proponent plans to reroute a 230 KV transmission line from the Sunnyside Terminal Station to the Come By Chance Refinery. The proposed transmission line will be 6.2 kilometres in length and will consist of shortened span steel towers. The undertaking was registered on February 9, 2000; public comments are due on March 17, 2000; and the minister's decision is due on March 25, 2000.

ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE APPOINTED

Undertaking: Forest Management District 16 Amendment (Sheffield Lake, Main River)

Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper

On February 7, 2000 the minister required Corner Brook Pulp and Paper to submit an environmental preview report to address environmental issues related to the undertaking. Therefore, the minister has appointed an environmental assessment committee pursuant of the Environmental Assessment Act to advise him on scientific and technical matters related to the proposed undertaking. The committee will be represented by the following provincial and federal agencies:

Department of Environment and Labour - Environmental Assessment Division
Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods
Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation - Tourism Division
Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation - Parks and Natural Areas Division
Environment Canada - Canadian Wildlife Service
Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Habitat Management Branch
Fisheries and& Oceans Canada - Canadian Coast Guard
Parks Canada - Canadian Heritage

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
