Acting minister salutes provinces teachers

Acting Education Minister Beaton Tulk invites Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to join him in celebrating World Teachers Day tomorrow October 5, by recognizing the contributions of the more than 6,000 teachers in the province.

"As a former educator I know first-hand the commitment, enthusiasm and energy this provinces teachers bring to their work," said Minister Tulk. "I had the privilege of working alongside some inspiring individuals during my 17-year career as a teacher and principal.

"The teachers of Newfoundland and Labrador are an exceptional group of professionals dedicated to the education and well-being of our students. Their commitment often goes beyond the classroom and has a profound effect on the lives of our young people and our province."

The minister pointed to the number of teachers receiving local, national and international awards as an indicator of the regard in which many are held both within and outside the province.

"The teachers in our education system continue to demonstrate the acumen and attitude on which our provinces international reputation for excellence in education was founded," Minister Tulk concluded.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated October 5 as World Teachers Day six years ago.
