Minister releases June 2000 high school exam results

The Minister of Education, Judy Foote, has released the 1999-2000 final achievement results for senior high school students.

"I am pleased to announce that 27,812 high school students completed 183,028 course evaluations this year, achieving an overall pass rate of 89 per cent. Of the 6,614 students completing their final year of high school, over 30 per cent (2,088 students) graduated with honours, which is a seven per cent increase over last year. This is a testament to the commitment and ability of our students and the talent and dedication of our teachers ," said Minister Foote.

A provincial examination in Chemistry 3202 was administered based on the common Atlantic Provinces Curriculum prepared for senior high school students. "Eighty-eight per cent of the 2,908 students who wrote the provincial chemistry examination passed the course" said Minister Foote.

This examination was developed and validated by teachers and testing experts from Newfoundland and Labrador and the other three Atlantic provinces, and administered and marked locally. The final mark for this course was obtained through a 50-50 blend of the provincial examination mark and the school mark, which measured students achievement throughout the year.

Official transcripts are being mailed to students on July 19 and summaries of overall results are now being forwarded to schools and school districts.
