BACKGROUNDER

$6.5 million for College of the North Atlantic Health Sciences Programs

On March 15, 2000 Education Minister Judy Foote announced the allocation of $6 million over two years to expand the Prince Philip Drive campus of the College of the North Atlantic to accommodate the health sciences program currently housed at the Topsail Road campus. In addition, $500,000 was allocated for the purchase of equipment for the health sciences program - bringing the total equipment budget to $1 million.

The colleges health sciences faculty include programs in medical laboratory sciences, medical radiography, respiratory therapy, ultrasound, occupational therapists assistants and physiotherapists assistants.

"This investment will ensure that health sciences students at the college have better accommodations and equipment. There is high demand in Newfoundland and Labrador for graduates from the health sciences field. I am very pleased that we have been able to allocate money that will enhance the programs offered by the college and allow students to practice their skills on state-of-the-art equipment," said Minister Foote.

"I am absolutely delighted with this announcement and it couldnt have come at a better time. With the expansion and emphasis on the health care system in the province and the growing needs of the health care industry, the renewed emphasis on expanding our ability to deliver well-educated front-line health care professionals is further enhanced by this initiative. I know Pam

Walsh, our president, and college staff and students sincerely appreciate this new funding. This is a clear indication of governments commitment to helping us carry out our mandate," said Dr. Vince Withers, Chairman, College of the North Atlantic.

There are 213 students enrolled in the health sciences programs at the College of the North Atlantic, supported by 35 faculty and support staff.
