$1 Million for course in Newfoundland and Labrador history

"I am pleased to announce that $1 million has been allocated over a two-year period for the development of a course in Newfoundland and Labrador history," said Education Minister Judy Foote today.

While the provinces history is currently included in courses taught in Grades 5 and 9, the Department of Education recognizes a concentrated course in Newfoundland and Labrador history is required and has committed to the development and implementation of such a course over the next two years.

"We have listened to the concerns of interest groups such as the Newfoundland Historical Society and we recognize the importance of providing students with the opportunity to study the unique history, culture and heritage of our province," added Minister Foote. "The people of our province have a strong history of facing challenges with strength, ingenuity and resourcefulness. Fostering, in students, an understanding of this, among other things, will serve them well as they move on to take their places as future leaders of this province."
