The following is being distriubted at the request of the Nova Scotia Department of Education, Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development:

Atlantic Canadas Young Entrepreneur Awards

Exceptional young entrepreneurs, their teachers and mentors are in the running for Atlantic Canadas newest entrepreneurship awards. A call for nominations for the Planet Entrepreneur Awards has been issued by Nova Scotias Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development.

The Planet Entrepreneur Awards celebrate the excellence of Atlantic Canadas young entrepreneurs and the encouragement of those who help inspire them. Whether its technology, landscaping, film-making, developing websites, or somewhere in between, the newest generation of entrepreneurs is fuelling our economy.

The awards will be presented on Friday, May 5, at Spirit of Entrepreneurship 2000, a mega-entrepreneurship conference being held at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax, from May 2 to 6. Spirit of Entrepreneurship, the largest conference of its kind in Canada, is expected to attract more than 1,000 young entrepreneurs, their educators and supporters.

To celebrate the new millennium and the growth of the Atlantic regions entrepreneurial culture, the centre decided to raise the profile of the former Young Entrepreneurs Going Places awards. Along with a new name, there are two new awards categories, the CBC-TVs New Media, Film and the Arts award, and an overall Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Other award categories include Entrepreneurship and Technology, Innovation, Supporter of Young Entrepreneurs, Service Excellence, Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year, Student Entrepreneur of the Year, and YES Entrepreneur of the Year.

Nominations are encouraged from all the Atlantic provinces to showcase this regions excellence and diversity. Any person or organization, including teachers, business counsellors, economic development officers and agencies, can complete nomination forms. Young entrepreneurs can also nominate themselves.

Official nomination forms are available online at www.planetentrepreneur.com, or from the centre by calling 1-800-590-8481. The nomination deadline is 4:30 p.m. (ADT), Friday, February 18.

To date, sponsors include Atlantic Progress, CBC-TV, Royal Bank Financial Group, and Sable Offshore Energy.
