Province lights the way for Christmas

The Confederation Building, East Block, will once again be the site of the annual Christmas Lights Across Canada Tree Lighting Ceremony.

On Thursday, December 2, at 7 p.m., Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will light up the provincial capital to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season. Christmas lights will be illuminated and decorative holiday billboards will be displayed throughout Confederation Hill. Christmas lighting will also be displayed at College of the North Atlantic, Memorial University, Health Sciences Centre and Signal Hill. This will be the most lights ever placed along Prince Philip Parkway.

"Last year, over 700 people came to Confederation Hill to celebrate this event," said Rick Woodford, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation. "Since we began in 1987, this event has grown increasingly popular. It's definitely something that people look forward to and enjoy celebrating."

The ceremony at the Confederation Building will coincide with similar ceremonies taking place in other provincial capitals. The Christmas Lights Across Canada Ceremony is an event organized nationally by the National Capital Commission.

"This ceremony is about celebrating twice," said Mr. Woodford. "We are celebrating the beginning of Christmas. We are also celebrating unity with the rest of Canada. That is especially relevant, given that we are commemorating our 50th anniversary of Confederation."

The Salvation Army St. John's Citadel Band and the Mary Queen of Peace Glee Club will join Mr. Woodford and emcee Krista Rudofsky for this special event. Refreshments will be served. The public and media are invited to attend.
